SoftBars User’s Manual

SoftBars™ is a body of computer software that is designed to print barcodes on documents with a minimum of user knowledge and effort. Barcodes consist of a series of lines of various widths that represent some data. A typical barcode contains a start character, some data, possibly one or more check digits, and a stop character. SoftBars parses the data being sent to the printer and replaces commands to print barcodes as Latin glyphs (like “ABC123”) with commands to draw lines. SoftBars works with the PCL® page description language used by Hewlett-Packard® LaserJet® printers. Over the years different versions of PCL have been used. SoftBars works with PCL 2, PCL 3, PCL 4, PCL 5, PCL 5e, and PCL 5c.

It does not work with PCL 6 (PCL/XL) or PostScript®. The latter two are entirely different languages than the former. For more information on this subject see “PDLs and SoftBars.” Other printer manufacturers produce printers that use the PCL language. SoftBars is designed to work with all printers that use the PCL language.
SoftBars makes the production of barcodes easy by calculating and supplying any check digits and start or stop characters that are required by the selected barcode symbology.
