Executive Summary Cisco Foundation for Network Services
Cisco Systems is taking a leadership role in developing the IP Security (IPSec) Protocol, a standards-based method of providing privacy, integrity, and authenticity to information transferred across IP networks. The Internet is rapidly changing the way we do business, but even the Internet’s rapid growth has been tarried by a lack of security. The Internet is subject to many threats, including loss of privacy, loss of data integrity, identity spoofing, and denial-of-service. The goal of IPSec is to address all of these threats in the network infrastructure itself, without requiring expensive host and application modifications.

Cisco IOS Switch Security Configuration Guide
Switches direct and control much of the data flowing across computer networks. This guide provides technical recommendations intended to help network administrators improve the security of their networks. Using the information presented here, the administrators can configure switches to control access, resist attacks, shield other network systems and protect the integrity and confidentiality of network traffic. Also, this guide can assist information security officers by describing the security issues related to critical systems (e.g., switches) which are part of their computer networks.

Using the VPN, all network traffic between your computer and the VPN concentrator is encrypted. In addition, the VPN allows you to connect to other systems as if your computer were on campus, whether or not it actually is physically located on the Berkeley “campus network.“

Networked at Cisco
Cisco Systems, Inc. was founded by two computer scientists at Stanford University in 1984 to develop and manufacture networking systems; Cisco went public in 1990. Until Cisco introduced its first commercial router in 1986, machines on local networks had been unable to communicate easily with machines outside of that network. The multi-protocol router allowed geographically dispersed local networks of computers, often using different networking protocols, to link together. Cisco quickly became a worldwide leader in networking hardware, software, and services, growing to over 40,000 employees and annual revenues of $23.8 billion by the end of 2000, although the downturn in the economy affected Cisco’s 2001 revenues and forced Cisco to lay off nearly 14% of its employees. (See Exhibit 1 for a chart of revenue growth and Exhibit 2 for a chart detailing the growth of the number of employees.)
