Ford Throttle Linkage Leak Problem Solved by New TransTec Seal

A C3, C4, C6, FMX or A4LD comes back to you because of a throttle shaft leak problem. Sound familiar? If you’re like the majority of transmission rebuilders, you’ve experienced this problem. Sure, it’s not a real major problem to fix, and you get that Ford back out on the road, but it’s still a hassle.
To fix this problem once and for all, TransTec has developed a four-lobed seal (quad ring) to replace the O-ring. TransTec developed this seal for the aftermarket to correct the O.E. sealing problem.

Ford Crown Victoria & OBD/IM Readiness

What Is OBD? Real-time, on-board monitoring system that is embedded in the Powertrain Control Module (PCM). Monitors all emission related components and systems as mandated by government agencies like EPA and CARB. Fault is communicated to the customer by means of the “Check Engine” light, also known as the Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL), along with a Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) set in the PCM. Brief History Of OBD OBD-I was implemented for 1988 and later model year vehicles. Monitoring limited to – Oxygen Sensor EGR System Fuel System Input Components MIL illuminated only while the fault is present. OBD-II was implemented across all vehicle lines in 1996 model year vehicles. Monitoring extended to include – Oxygen Sensor (enhanced) EGR System (enhanced) Fuel System (enhanced) Input/Output Components (CCM) Catalyst Efficiency Misfire Evaporative System Secondary Air System MIL is illuminated and remains on until there are 3 consecutive trips without the fault being present.

Ford Taurus Fan Installation

Try to get one with a large integral shroud so as to cover as much of the radiator as possible. Your low vehicle-speed cooling ability (particularly stopped at idle) hinges on maximizing air flow through the radiator. The more shroud area, the greater the ability of the fan to pull air through the radiator.
The following is how I mounted mine.
First I took some aluminum angle and mounted it to the top of the fan. The idea here is to spread the load across as much of the plastic shroud as possible Since the fan has mass and will be under constant vibration loading while the car is in motion, using this type of angle bracket scheme across the top of the fan shroud will spread the load across a wide patch of the plastic shroud to minimize stress.
The next step is to fab the brackets. I wanted the fan to hang on the top of the radiator and have the brackets hidden under the top radiator cover for as much of a factory look as possible. The following is what I did. I grabbed a bracket from my “scrap metal box” and bent it into a U-shape, where the U is able to fit over the top of the radiator as shown below.
Below is a close up of the U bracket installed. Note the aluminum angle has been painted flat black. The U bracket bolts to the aluminum angle. Use as low a profile screw head as possible since the screw head is on the radiator side.

Installing a Ford Taurus 3.8L Electric Fan Into an Explorer Sport Trac

Installing an electric fan to replace the stock clutch driven fan helps your motor in many ways. First, your engine warms up faster since the fan does not turn on until needed. Second, you will gain power because the motor no longer has to turn the stock fan while the engine runs. The additional mass causes drag on the engine and can result in the loss of 5-8 horsepower. Finally, you will see an increase in fuel mileage, especially on the interstate, again, because you’re freeing up some of the rotational mass and air drag. Your fan will not come on at interstate speeds if it’s working and adjusted properly. You’ll gain overall power and top end passing power which is useful on the interstate, plus, it’s just fun to have. I’m rating this as a 4 wrench project because it requires removal of major engine parts, and if done incorrectly, you could damage your engine and void your warranty.
